We are pleased to announce that the Ancient Monuments of the Black Sea project, conducted jointly by research teams from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, has been honoured with the Award of the Presidents of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for outstanding achievements in the humanities and social sciences.
This distinction, bestowed once every five years upon the best joint research projects undertaken by the two academies, highlights the significance of Polish–Ukrainian collaboration in the study of the ancient heritage of the Black Sea region.
Since 2016, the project team has carried out extensive research in Olbia Pontica and other sites along the northern Black Sea coast, offering a new perspective on the history of these areas after the decline of the Roman Empire. The archaeological discoveries have revealed the presence of settlement linked to the Chernyakhiv culture, as well as a rich assemblage of artefacts shedding light on contacts and transformations in the late antique Pontic world.
The award ceremony will take place on 8 December 2025: in Warsaw, the award will be received by Dr Alfred Twardecki, head of the Polish part of the project, and in Kyiv by Prof. Alla Buyskikh, head of the Ukrainian team.
