Dr Iryna Chechulina’s Research Fellowship under the PAN–NASU Programme

Between 20 October and 20 November 2025Dr Iryna Chechulina from the Institute of Archaeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine undertook a one-month research stay at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IAE PAS) in Warsaw, within the framework of the PAN–NASU programme carried out under the Ancient Monuments of the Black Sea project.

During the fellowship, Dr Chechulina conducted extensive library research in major academic collections (IAE PAS, the University of Warsaw, and the National Museum in Warsaw) and carried out comparative studies of museum holdings in Warsaw and Kraków. Her work focused on the iconography of Gorgoneia on Attic black-figure kylikes from Olbia and Berezan. As part of the stay, she prepared a digital catalogue of ceramic fragments and a draft scholarly article devoted to the typology and chronology of these representations.

The fellowship culminated in a public lecture delivered at IAE PAS, entitled “The Gorgoneion on Black-Figure Kylikes from Olbia Pontica and Berezan: Typology, Chronology, and Cultural Context”, the recording of which is available online.

Building on the results of the visit, further collaboration is planned, including the development of a comprehensive catalogue of Attic black-figure pottery and the publication of a scholarly article in one of the IAE PAS journals.
